A couple of weeks ago, Obiter’s memory lane featured the 1960s TV law drama, The Main Chance. What we omitted to say was that the series was devised by solicitor John Batt (pictured), who, among other achievements, wrote a theme tune used for many years by News at Ten, and acted for Sally Clark, wrongly convicted of killing her children. A mutual friend tells us Batt has just celebrated his 80th birthday and is ‘still defending the victims of miscarriages of justice, still working as a consultant to a law firm, still takes on pro bono cases – usually involving mothers falsely accused of their babies’ deaths’. And he’s still playing the church organ and writing music, too.
