The IBA conference is considered by many to be an excuse to attend as many parties as possible, with the daily round of worthy sessions a necessary (or not) prelude to the serious business of networking at the countless evening receptions. There is also an unofficial battle between law firms for the most fashionable party venue, and occasionally, entertaining ironies crop up. For example, international firm Salans pulled off a nice coup by bagging the imposing gothic tower on the Charles Bridge for its mid-week bash. All well and good, apart from the fact that delegates had to climb at least 100 narrow, medieval steps before they could tuck into the canapés. Unfortunate for any disabled guests, and a little bit embarrassing against the backdrop of an earlier session that day - 'Disability discrimination - EU framework employment directive' chaired by Barry Mordsley of Salans' London office. Next time a Disability Discrimination Act-compliant venue, please.
