Obiter's Christmas card collection has been a bit sad this year. There's not much fun in pinning up on the wall the countless emailed 'cards', or emails which are not cards at all but explanations that the firm will not be sending out cards this year.

We did receive a rather odd shiny strip thingy from City firm Lovells, emblazoned with 'Season's Greetings' in various languages, which doesn't fold particularly well into the suggested figure 8 and doesn't really work as a strange hat either. But it was nice to get it anyway.

This year's always-entertaining gimmick from City firm Lewis Silkin was what it has called an OLSFLAU - the Official Lewis Silkin Festive Lawsuit Avoidance Unit. This is a sieve that allows you to sprinkle icing sugar on to your mince pies to spell out the warning 'Caution Hot!'. In the words of the accompanying card, this will allow you to serve your mince pies 'safe in the knowledge that your guests have been robustly forewarned'. It's good to see that some solicitors take health and safety seriously.

In summary then, grateful thanks to leading after-the-event insurer Temple Legal Protection for being old-fashioned enough to send out a traditional card with an amusing cartoon.
