Child's play:
Obiter hopes the Solicitors Regulation Authority paid attention to this week's foreign news. Apparently an eight-year-old Brazilian lad has caused quite a stir by successfully passing the entrance exam to law school. The cerebral nipper had only studied for a week, and is not even a child genius according to his mum - just 'a regular boy'. Brazil's Bar Association is up in arms, saying it shows the low standards of some of the country's law schools. What should interest the ?regulator over here, though, is the interest the story has generated in the UK. Amazingly, it was the fourth most popular story on Guardian Online last week. Why the sudden interest in entry requirements to the Brazilian legal profession? Could it have anything to do with the qualified lawyers transfer test, the subject of such fierce debate at the moment? As one Obiter source playfully suggests, perhaps the story is being read by all those would-be solicitors out there looking for an easy route to qualification. Now all they have to do is qualify in Brazil, transfer their qualification to Portugal - and then they are as good as on the roll. The Law Society may need to order in some child-sized gowns for its admissions ceremonies.
