It is fair to say that barristers consider themselves a different breed from solicitors; not necessarily better (there must be a few who would agree with that), just different. So there may be some consternation this week after Bar Council chairman Stephen Hockman QC, when asked by Simon Mayo on BBC Radio 5Live to explain what his members do, said: 'We're the same as solicitors, only a different kind [of lawyer].' And what do solicitors think of such a controversial claim? At least the sudden softening of the Bar Council's opposition to alternative business structures since Mr Hockman took over is now a bit more understandable.
