Tangentially on the music theme, Radio Four listeners last week were treated on Desert Island Discs to the top tunes of one of the country's highest-profile solicitors, Digby Jones (below), who for the past six years has been Director General of the Confederation of British Industry. Mr Jones's taste veers rather too closely for our liking towards the middle of the road. While it is difficult to argue with his early choices - standbys such as 'Nimrod' from Elgar's 'Enigma Variations', 'Younger than Springtime' from the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic musical 'South Pacific', and rugby terraces favourite 'Jerusalem' - some of the more contemporary tracks wouldn't bag him much street cred with trainees these days. For example, Neil Diamond's sickly sweet 'Hello Again', more saccharine from George Benson with his 'In Your Eyes', the ultimate cheesey classic by the Groover from Vancouver, Bryan Adams, '(Everything I do) I do it for you', and two diva-performed wedding reception stalwarts - Tina Turner's 'The Best' and 'Wind Beneath my Wings' from Bette Midler (which is the track that Diggers would actually single out if he had to forsake the rest). Oh well, who ever said that solicitors or leaders of industry had to be cool.
