Over to the City of London for a heart-warming story of how lawyers are struggling with the big social issues of the day. Obiter was recently in a discussion with a couple of partners from one Square Mile law firm about attempts to widen diversity within the top-end commercial firms in the country. One partner had recently been 'mentoring' a young paralegal from a 'non-traditional background' who was keen to qualify as a solicitor. The problem, of course, was finding a law firm willing to take on potential candidates of this type and sponsor them through the legal practice course and two years of training. When it was gently pointed out to the two that, as partners in a prominent and successful law firm, they might be ideally placed to do just that, shocked expressions gave way to chuntering about how it just wouldn't wash with the rest of the partnership. Oh well, chalk another one up for Oxbridge.
