Peter Wade appears bravely to be setting out to make himself the least popular family law specialist solicitor within the profession. Mr Wade &150; a practitioner of 25 years' standing &150; has just written a book called How to do your own divorce, which was released last week by publisher How to Books. For the moderate price of £10.99, couples that have reached the end of their tethers and realised that marriage and bliss do not always go hand in hand can pick up this useful guide and unhitch themselves. The publisher's blurb notes that more than 150,000 couples filed for divorce in 2004-2005, and strongly points out that it is 'almost guaranteed to be a painful experience and [this is the important bit] with legal help generally required, it can also have the added pressure of being expensive'. That sounds like a not-so-subtle way of reminding punters that an entire legal industry is built around the demise of marriages. Mr Wade's PR team has attempted to keep the profession partially on side by describing the guide as providing 'both literal step-by-step actions to follow in order to complete the divorce without legal help as well as valuable assistance for those using a solicitor'. But still, it is difficult to envisage Mr Wade being the guest of honour at the next Resolution annual dinner.
