A candidate for press release of the several years too late award for 2006 arrives at Obiter HQ. We shall for once spare the blushes of the London firm in question but the practice has apparently taken a 'bold step in adopting a casual clothes policy'. It is so excited that it insists this is 'unprecedented', with staff allowed to wear 'whatever they wish' to work unless they are off to court or attending meetings. It is as if the dot-com boom never happened. What might be interesting though - given the reliance on the staff's 'good sense' - is whether things have moved on since 2000 when the senior partner of a top City firm attempted to wear combat trousers. The trousers were never seen again, following the advice of colleagues. Whether Obiter's hot fashion tip for this autumn/winter of sweater dresses will likewise be deemed to be unacceptable in law firms' offices remains to be seen.
