If you were near Canary Wharf last Thursday and were unnerved by a group of people either (a) smiling inanely at you, (b) trying to give you a hug, (c) offering you a loaf of bread that they had baked, (d) thrusting their phone number into your hands and those of four other people in their street, or (e) offering to have a bath with you, Obiter can put your mind at rest. It was not 'The Invasion of the Bodysnatchers', but rather the good folk at Clifford Chance taking part in the inaugural 'We are what we do' action day. The above actions were all contained in a list of 50 simple steps proposed by a global 'movement' that aims to change the world through everyday actions. Other recommended actions included: spending time with someone from a different generation (no. 14 on the list); learning to be friendly in another language (no. 18); and writing to someone who inspired you (no. 35). There were, however, some that did not seem quite as appropriate to the world of City law firms, such as turning off your appliances at the mains (no. 12; who said you could leave the office?), smile and smile back (no. 5; requires gritted teeth on the part of trainees handed another piece of drudgery), or taking time to listen (no. 36; not a strength of partners). Everyone at CC was meanwhile given a copy of the book Change the world for a fiver, while the firm hopes to have its own book of suggestions ready for Christmas. Obiter has already gone into the loft at home to get the stockings in anticipation.
