Master of the rolls Lord Neuberger conjured a diverting festive image in a recent speech about the new Supreme Court. Is the House of lords ‘losing part of itself’? he pondered. ‘Is it, the Supreme Court, losing a daughter or gaining a son? Or have the law lords simply transmogrified themselves into Supreme Court justices, indistinguishable in everything but name, robes, logo and location? Have they simply leapt across Parliament Square – appropriately for this seasonal period, were they 12 lords-a-leaping?’ One can but dimly imagine former lord chief justice Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, Lord Hope, Baroness Hale et al flying mystically through the sky in flowing robes. Perhaps they might even pass a bearded chap being pulled along by reindeer?
