A caricature of a somewhat more genteel kind than AttorneyMan is to go under the hammer later this month at auction house Bonhams. 'The Lord Chancellor's Breakfast', an oil painting by A Duncan Carse, depicts the opening of the legal year procession of the great and the good of the legal world around the beginning of the 20th century. The two lead characters are Richard Everard Webster, Lord Chief Justice between 1900 and 1913, and - to his left - the 1st Earl of Halsbury, Lord Chancellor from 1895 to1905. Clues to the identities of the various individuals in the crowd are given by the items they are holding, such as ships, golf clubs and swords. The writs flying through the rafters also signify the forthcoming legal year. The painting is expected to fetch between £6,000 and £8,000. For more information, visit: www.bonhams.com.
