The Legal Services Commission (LSC), ever anxious to ensure taxpayers' money is spent wisely, rightly baulked at the idea of one of its employees allegedly not paying for his £1.60 fry-up in the works canteen. So it apparently took the decision to invoke its disciplinary policy against Denis Breading, an administrator in its special investigations unit. Mr Breading told the Daily Mail that the commission has spent £10,000 attempting to prove he 'misused public funds'. It may spend a further £15,000 on a special arbitrator to resolve the case, which Mr Breading strongly disputes. His rasher of bacon, egg and fried slice could end up costing the public £25,000. An egg-cellent use of public funds? Or has the LSC made a hash of it? Will Mr Breading save his bacon? The commission's spokesman scrambled to play down the significance of the story: 'Any suggestion that one internal investigation into an employee may cost the LSC, and therefore the taxpayer, £25,000 is totally outlandish. The cost of this investigation is limited to the time of those few people involved in the investigation. There are no additional costs.'
