How does a barrister celebrate a new year? No, it's not a bad Christmas cracker joke, but an important lifestyle question.

Far from the high jinks that one might expect of our learned friends, more than 100 spent their precious New Year's Eve champagne-quaffing time furiously completing continuing professional development (CPD) courses before the end of year deadline and resultant penalties from the Bar Council.

According to Stephen Caine, chief executive of the CPD Channel, there was a course being completed every five minutes on its site on 31 December. 'It would have been very sad if they had actually seen the new year in completing a course,' he said.

So if a barrister tells you that the New Year's Eve event they were going to was called off because of the bad weather, you now know what they were really up to.
