Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger was the guest speaker at the annual Liberty/Justice Human Rights Awards, held at the end of last year to coincide with the UN's human rights day. His remarks were typically forthright, as he lashed out at both lawyers and journalists. 'For every enlightened lawyer and judge that tries to push the boundaries of free speech, there is one that tries to restrict it,' he started, before continuing: 'Privacy is a human right that is every bit as important as freedom of expression. You can't cherry pick human rights.' But then he made a jokey reference to a recruitment coincidence involving the bastion of liberal journalism's in-house legal team. While paying tribute to the Guardian/Observer lawyers - headed by solicitor Siobhain Butterworth - Mr Rusbridger pointed out that the stellar squad was exclusively female. 'One day the Equal Opportunities Commission may take an interest in why it appears that male lawyers are not suitable for our in-house legal team,' he quipped.
