‘This house believes that Britain has become a more safe, just and tolerant society under Labour. Debate.’ With the battlelines thus drawn, the Society of Conservative Lawyers locked horns with the Society of Labour Lawyers, with Marcel Berlins, Guardian journalist and law lecturer, chairing the protagorean feast.
For Labour were Stephen Hesford MP, barrister Sam Townend and solicitor Kevin Bonavia. For the Tories were James Brokenshire MP, shadow Home Office minister, and barristers David Nicholls and Claire Palmer.
Would the leftward lean of Berlins’ newspaper favour those in red? Indeed not. Following some fiery exchanges, the Tories emerged victorious – or in other words, they successfully argued that Britain has become a more dangerous, unjust and intolerant society under Labour. That’s cheery. Still, never mind, at least the economy is in good shape.
