They say in business that Cash is King, but at Brixton firm Ziadies it’s not only notes bearing the Queen’s head that are legal (sic) tender. The firm says it accepts a new local currency, the Brixton pound, or the B£, as valid payment for oaths and affidavits. The initiative is designed to support local businesses and encourage local trade by keeping money in the area. The Brixton notes, which come in values of one, five, 10 and 20 pounds, each commemorate local heroes, including Olive Morris, a radical political activist who established the Brixton Black Women’s Group and played an important role in the squatters’ rights campaigns of the 1970s. Esteddar MacGregor, the firm’s managing partner, said: ‘We’ve been in Brixton for 23 years and wanted to show support for the local community. It’s been quite a big thing and I hope the B£ will be around for many years to come.’ Though sensibly, the firm is still accepting sterling as well.
