After a half a decade studying sexism in the criminal justice system, those doughty campaigners at the Fawcett Society say they have found ‘clear examples of attempts to make female workers fit the male mould’. Quite literally, in the case of some police forces, which have been caught trying to fit women officers into male uniforms. Apparently the problem arises because cop shops follow military procedure dating from the 1950s and issue shirts and stab vests solely according to collar size. ‘There is little understanding that women come in different shapes and sizes to men,’ the society observed. Justice Minister Maria Eagle, who attended the launch of the research at Chancery Lane , described the situation as ‘crazy’, observing: ‘I’m not sure that even a modern man can fit into a 1950s shirt.’
