The West Indies have been racking up huge batting totals in the Caribbean this winter (Ramnaresh Sarwan, 291, Barbados, springs to mind). These gritty performances have in turn caused great anguish for the English bowling attack. Unfortunately, Obiter has to predict that the pained expressions of Andrew Strauss & Co will be replicated on the faces of 22 English lawyers this coming summer. A Barbados legal team will arrive on English shores in August, not to impart wisdom on Caribbean law, but more likely to inflict bouncers and leg cutters on both the England & Wales Barristers XI and England & Wales Solicitors XI. Cambridge University will host this year’s Lawyers Cricket World Cup between 26 July and 4 August, with other teams due in from countries including Pakistan, India, New Zealand, South Africa and Australia. The teams will lodge at the university’s Churchill College and group matches will be played on university pitches. Organiser Peter Dodd, a solicitor at Cumbria firm Temple Heelis, hopes the final will be held at The Oval – just weeks before the (real) England XI host the Windies midway through their summer tour. Obiter has sharpened his scoring pencil in anticipation.
