More news from the wacky world of truck-driving solicitors. Jeremy Thomas, a solicitor from Sandbach in Cheshire, writes in to say he has held a class 1 heavy goods vehicle (HGV) licence for nine years and a public service vehicle (PSV) licence for 19. But that's nothing compared to Michael Friend, a retired transport and employers' liability lawyer from Surrey, who informs us that he 'easily beat both Mr Tony Spiers and Mr Murray Oliver, having held both HGV and PSV licences since the early eighties'. But that's not all - he can even trump Murray Oliver in the sartorial stakes (see [2005] Gazette, 28 April, 10), having worked part-time for Epsom Coaches in the mid-eighties driving around the country and in France. 'I had to wear their uniform and so I am afraid Mr Oliver is not the only solicitor who has dressed like a coach (not a bus please!) driver,' he explains. 'I wonder therefore if I am the only solicitor to have held both licences for the longest time, dressed the part, and actually worked in the coach industry as a driver?' Sadly, Mr Friend does not have photographic evidence to back up this extraordinary claim, although he does still have the uniform at home. Instead, we will have to make do with a picture of Mr Oliver again, who has gamely sent in a pic showing that he can also dress like a solicitor when driving a truck.
