Here at Obiter HQ we like nothing more than to bring news of feats of derring-do and general sporting success achieved by members of the legal profession. So step forward Sian Reynolds, a solicitor previously at Harding Evans in Newport, Wales.

Ms Reynolds was 1,479 miles from Salvador in Brazil - at least she was late on Monday afternoon - while taking part in the Clipper Round the World Yacht challenge. Her boat, Glasgow: Scotland with Style, was in a creditable third place (out of ten) in the first stage of the race. The competition, which was set up by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston in 1995, sees teams of amateurs sailing identical 68-foot yachts around the world.

Ms Reynolds will be on board for the first three of the seven stages. This involves taking on the mighty Southern Ocean before she finishes at Fremantle in western Australia. 'I am aware of the dangers but it is something I have got to do,' she said before departure. 'I've dreamed about racing in the Southern Ocean for years, but now I get to dream with my eyes open.'

Sailing is in the family, with both Sian and her brother having been selected for the Welsh national sailing team when they were younger.
