Disturbing evidence proving the modern maxim that no matter where you are in the world, you are never more than a few yards from a City lawyer. A trainee solicitor from a magic circle firm tells of her recent holiday to Japan, where she visited a remote skiing resort. Following an exhausting day on the slopes, our heroine decided to get away from it all and to partake in a truly Japanese experience by having a relaxing dip in the resort's onsen (the Japanese word for a hot spring bath). Local cultural habits dictate that while the genders are separated, those using the baths should eschew all bathing costumes. Overcoming a natural British reserve, the trainee slipped into the warm waters where she found many Japanese faces and the face of one westerner. And the latter turned out to be... an assistant from the London HQ of Linklaters.
