Lawyers found themselves subjected to an energetic attack on their attitude to consumers at the Law Society's law management section annual conference last week. Louise Restell, campaigns project manager at consumer group Which?, revealed that solicitors are barely one notch up in the food chain from estate agents and politicians in the eyes of consumers, who frequently describe the profession as 'patronising, arrogant and rude'. This assertion was backed up by a ten-minute video, mostly of Very Angry People, saying exactly that - with a few other unflattering adjectives such as 'incompetent' thrown in. Whether comments from those folk who actually liked their lawyers had been edited out, Obiter couldn't possibly comment, but delegates seemed to take it on the chin. Ms Restell also ventured to tell one of the 'hundreds' of lawyer jokes she had found on the Web. 'How many lawyers does it take to change a light bulb?' she quipped. 'None. They prefer to keep their clients in the dark.' Ouch. Obiter counters with this: How many consumer rights campaigners does it take to change a light bulb? Answer: none. They are all too busy taking a pop at lawyers.
