As if life wasn't hard enough nowadays being a lawyer, Obiter has been contacted by two who spend their spare time training for triathlons (that's the bonkers combination of swimming, cycling and running).
For solicitors, we have Vicky Edwards, an employment lawyer at West Midlands firm Young & Lee, who will be representing Great Britain at next month's Triathlon World Championships in Lausanne, organised by the International Triathlon Union. She will have to swim a mile, cycle 40 miles and finish off with a six-mile run. The former policewoman, who is sponsored by her firm, tells us: 'Some people think I'm mad, but it's like a drug and I feel awful if I miss a day's training.'
Standing up for the bar is Matthew Lewis from Cardiff chambers 30 Park Place, who is to take part in the Ironman World Championship in Florida this November. The event is the culmination of the Ironman 70.3 (which relates to a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride and 13.1-mile run), organised by World Triathlon Corporation. Mr Lewis came 17th among his age group in the UK version, meaning he can compete in the world event.
He became interested in triathlon while on secondment in Australia and says he will be stepping up his training back in his homeland. 'The Welsh sunshine should help,' he says. 'It feels like being back on Bondi Beach - well, almost.'
