The general perception may be that senior judges are out of touch with people atop the Clapham Omnibus, but then most people won't have met the Master of the Rolls, Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers. First, for those still struggling with the location of Worth Matravers, Obiter is here to help. It is a small Devon village in an area known as the Jurassic coast. But, as the president of the Institute of Legal Executives, Sandra Barton, said at the recent ILEX annual conference in Stratford-upon-Avon, Lord Phillips is 'no dinosaur'. And indeed, as the standard disco kicked off at the conference dinner, the man who spends most of his time on the Court of Appeal bench when he's not overseeing the roll of solicitors, was the first on the dance floor as the DJ geared up the turntables - and he stayed there, shimmying to such classic fodder as Hot Chocolate's 'You Sexy Thing'. It is slightly irritating when senior members of the judiciary give journalists their best lines, but we have to confess that as Lord Phillips left the dance floor for a well-earned rest, he remarked to Obiter: 'I am clearly the Master of the Rock 'n' Rolls.'
