Rare opportunity for grassroots lawyers to make their voices heard.
Few subjects in the Gazette’s ambit generate such impassioned opinions as regulation. Every week our postbag is guaranteed to contain numerous missives from lawyers taking a swipe at the Solicitors Regulation Authority and/or Legal Complaints Service. Some are downright libellous, which further proves the point.
The Gazette is a lightning rod and a forum for debate, never a referee; it would be highly unusual for us to take an interest in an individual case. In recent months, however, we have experienced a groundswell of reader comment on the performance and role of the watchdogs. This does not exactly surprise – they are relatively new organisations in their present incarnations and solicitors had to wait and see how they worked before expressing a view, which solicitors are rarely reluctant to do.
But Lord Hunt’s review of regulation offers a rare opportunity for grassroots lawyers to make their voices heard in a debate which may bring about reform. He is currently working on his call for evidence and he will want to hear from all who have an interest.
A website will soon be established detailing the review’s terms of reference and how it will proceed. We will bring you more details in due course. Be sure to grasp this opportunity. It is unlikely to come round again soon.
