First up in our exciting 'my ship's bigger than yours' competition is Guy Thompson, a solicitor at Birkett Long in Chelmsford. He bought Iris (pictured) off the Internet two years ago. At 52 foot long, she is one of the largest lifeboats of her type and served in the Shetlands from 1961 to 1982. As a keen sailor, Mr Thompson decided Iris would be a good addition to the family and has even entertained clients on board. It is not known whether he has had to effect any rescues, which might make his entry unbeatable even at this early stage, but he has certainly thrown down the gauntlet to any would-be challengers.
