Late last year [2008, Gazette, 20 November, 3], the Lord Chancellor’s Department revealed the logo for the new Supreme Court. Readers with an interest in heraldry will recall its emblematic depiction of the UK’s three jurisdictions embraced by a symbol representing both Libra and omega. Now the Tories’ Dominic Grieve has discovered how much this artistic exercise set us back: £26,200. ‘This cost includes design and development by heraldic artist Yvonne Holton; redrawing and presentation to the Queen by Garter King of Arms; and development of the symbol in an electronic and adaptable format by design consultants,’ Jack Straw told Parliament in a written answer. Sums worth recalling the next time the Lord Chancellor sounds off about Bolly-swilling legal aid lawyers.
