For all the efforts by the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers to rebrand, it is astonishing how the oldest of sores continues to fester - is APIL pronounced with a soft 'a' (like apple) or a hard one (like age)? For the record, APIL members are under strict instructions from chief executive Denise Kitchener to adopt the latter - and we would be the last people to have the temerity to cross her - but the message still has not filtered across the personal injury world, to judge by the number of speakers using the former. Obiter suggests it should be clause one of any agreement APIL reaches in its talks with the Forum of Insurance Lawyers (for the avoidance of any doubt, FOIL is pronounced as in the tin variety).
