Fans of Blur (a popular music group, m’lud) are delighted that the band are gearing up for a series of gigs this summer, including Hyde Park in July – their first live performance since 2000.
Drummer Dave Rowntree has another matter on his mind: law school exams. But he has assured his fans that music comes first. Writing on Blur’s official web forum he says: ‘I am fitting my studies around our preparation for the shows in the summer…I will continue to fit my studies around the band and not the other way round.’
The drummer says he has been working at an east London firm, spending time in courts and police stations ‘representing those at the bottom of the pile’ such as the homeless, drug addicts, alcoholics and those with mental health problems.
If Rowntree goes on to practise law, he will join a very small corps of acclaimed rock musicians to switch to a legal career. Off the top of his head, Obiter can recall only one other example. Tom Rapp, of the 1960s psychedelic legend Pearls Before Swine, went on to become a noted human-rights lawyer in Philadelphia. Am I missing anyone?
