Every so often, someone comes up with the idea of coining a modern English phrase for the term pro bono. None of the suggested replacements has caught on – and doesn’t everyone understand pro bono anyway? Apparently not, Cherie Booth QC told the launch of nominations for the Law Society Junior Lawyers Division’s annual pro bono awards. Booth told a story from the time her husband was prime minister. Booth was due to give a talk at the Palace of Westminster on pro bono advice. Her Scotland Yard-provided detective went in first, to check it out and emerged looking worried: ‘I think we must be in the wrong place – I’ve looked everywhere but there’s no sign of Bono.’
