It may not sound quite as adventurous as Mongolia, but Obiter has also heard from another solicitor making a gruelling journey for charity. Gerard Rogers, senior solicitor at Chesterfield Borough Council, has just cycled 950 miles from John O’Groats to Lands End, in 10 days. Rogers tells us that the trip took in some steep climbs in Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Cornwall, and some thrilling descents. He battled with snow on Ben Nevis, cycled the length of Arran, out-raced blood-sucking Scottish clegs (a particularly voracious horsefly, apparently), cycled on remote country roads and busy dual carriageways, crossed the Severn and Clifton suspension bridges, and cycled the full length of Cornwall in a day. Managing an impressive 100 miles a day, he and two fellow cyclists reached Lands End in the early evening, ‘with the setting sun shining golden across a blue sea and the dramatic rocky coastline’. Wow. And he hasn’t even mentioned the saddle-sore. Rogers has already raised £2,000 for charity but further donations can be made at www.everydayhero.co.uk/gerard_rogers.
