Obiter was royally impressed to learn this week that solicitors at Leeds firm Richardson & Co have been hobnobbing with no less a personage than HRH the Prince of Wales. Apparently HRH met senior partner Danny Richardson (centre) and Stephen Oldroyd (left) after a memorial service which the solicitors were attending as supporters of war veterans’ charity Forgotten Heros.
The Prince asked Richardson about his involvement with the charity (‘and what do you do?’). Richardson explained that his firm has provided free legal advice to the organisation. Then with admirable cheek, the solicitor presented the heir to the throne with a business card and told him that, as HRH was unlikely to qualify for legal aid, he would be prepared to offer Charles free legal advice ‘in his capacity as Commander in Chief of the armed forces’. The Prince, unlike a certain Victorian ancestor of his, was most amused, and quipped that this was the first time he had ever come across solicitors doing work for nothing. Touché! Any other solicitors who have been snapped with royalty can send their pictures over to obiter@lawsociety.org.uk.
