Obiter has previously highlighted the tremendous sporting success of Ralph Johnson, a solicitor at Camden Council (see [2005] Gazette, 24 November, 10), the world veterans épée champion. But it transpires that he is not the only lawyer to have reached the heights in fencing. Geoff Silverman, a district judge at Edmonton County Court since 1992 and a former solicitor, also represented England at the Commonwealth veterans' fencing championship. He won team gold medal at foil, team silver at sabre and individual bronze at sabre. Judge Silverman - inevitably dubbed Dredd on the fencing circuit - has represented Great Britain at the world veterans' championships, sadly without success. However, he did win sabre bronze medal at the Civil Service Sports Council Games, where he represented the Department for Constitutional Affairs. Obiter bets there's no messing around in Judge Silverman's court when he's hearing cases.
