Last week saw the Law Society Cricket Club take on the chartered accountants in their annual contest at the picturesque Shenley Cricket Ground, hoping to repeat its victories of the previous two years. But on a beautiful afternoon, the Society's attack was put to the sword by some aggressive batting from the accountants, who upset the natural professional order by racking up an impressive 274-2 off their 40 overs.
Additional drama was provided by Henry Moss of City firm Withers who, valiantly attempting a run-out, dislocated his throwing shoulder. 'The assembled throng of lawyers and accountants, distressingly ignorant of medical matters, were only marginally less relieved than Henry when the shoulder finally popped back into place,' our reporter at the ground tells us. In reply, Miles Picknett of Oxford's Henmans started the innings strongly with 54, well supported by Andrew Royce of Jameson & Hill in Ware (41). However, despite contributions down the order, including a towering straight six from Bob Palmer of City firm CMS Cameron McKenna, wickets fell steadily and the Law Society were dismissed for 195.
The Law Society team was skippered by Withers partner Tim Taylor and in all eight firms, both in and out of London, were represented.
