Dedication, as we all know, is what you need if you want to be a record-breaker. And so a team of lawyers from broadcaster Sky determined they would set the world record for the – wait for it – longest three-legged walk in 24 hours. Like you do.
As a team of three pairs, Oliver Holland, Guy Le Grew, Marie-Claire McCartney, Sophie Lewis, Martin Davidson and Kate Lowes (pictured l-r) walked a total of 61 miles between them in London on 30 August – the hottest day of the year.
The three-legged walking champs are not in it just for the glory. No, they have raised £7,000 to build accommodation for teachers in Malawi, where there is only one teacher for every 61 pupils – hence the 61-mile walk.
Starting at Richmond Park in West London, the teams tramped round the capital, ending up at the Malawi High Commission eight hours later.
Davidson said: ‘There is no current world record in this event. To set a new one, we had to come up with an event that Guinness thought would be good enough to merit a new category... There was a list of rules we had to comply with, which included having two independent witnesses to accompany us, who then provide witness statements to confirm that we did it, plus photographic evidence.’
They are hoping to find out whether their attempt will be certified as a new world record in the near future. Obiter will, of course, bring you news of their feet...
