Soul men: at last we have a challenger to Cambridge-based lawyer Allis Karim, who recently and controversially claimed to be 'very much the most soulful lawyer in the UK' (see [2007] Gazette, 21 June, 9). To justify the title, Mr Karim said he had set up his own record label, Lola Waxx Records, and directed readers to look at his profile at www.myspace.com/karimsmartfm. Memorably, he added: 'I don't know how many other lawyers are as funky as me or have a page on myspace which has such awesome grooves.'

Ted Flanagan, a partner at Gosschalks, has taken up the gauntlet on behalf of Allan Scorer in the Hull firm's private client department. Mr Scorer, a fee-earner but not a solicitor, has been 'singing in soul and blues bands for decades and once toured US forces bases in Germany with Arthur Conley (he of 'Sweet Soul Music' fame).'

He is now lead singer of The Rumble Band, which according to its website (www.rumbleband.com) has appeared with numerous Motown and soul legends such as Edwin Starr, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Jimmy Ruffin, George McRae, Ben E King and The Real Thing.

'I suspect this debate can only really be settled with an 'X-Factor' style sing off at Chancery Lane,' writes Mr Flanagan. Now there's a thought.
