The Obiter award for most generous - some would say cheekiest - offer of the week goes to Nick Freeman, the Manchester-based solicitor who specialises in defending celebrities charged with motoring offences. Mr Loophole, as the media calls him, has offered his services to South Yorkshire police chief Meredydd Hughes, who could be prosecuted for allegedly speeding on the A5 in north Wales. Mr Freeman, who is reputedly one of the highest-paid lawyers in the country, is also prepared to do it for free. He insists this is a 'very serious offer' as Mr Hughes, who has in the past revealed officers' frustrations at lawyers winning acquittals in such cases, 'can gain a better understanding of the legal implications and technicalities surrounding speed camera prosecutions'. Obiter is not a gambler, but would be willing to stake a large sum on the offer not being taken up.
