Sporting chance: With the summer finally upon us, we at Obiter HQ have decided to focus on the world of sport. In the past, we have profiled solicitors across a range of sports, including Olympic medal winners.

In a first for this page, however, news has arrived about the exploits of Kettering-based Ivan Sanders, who plays on the European Long Drive golf tour. He is the English and Italian Senior Open champion, regularly hitting the ball more than 310 metres before it lands again on terra firma.

Perhaps the most extraordinary part of Mr Sanders' story is that he only took up long driving in January, some 41 years after he last played golf.

His recent successes have come in the senior age category of 45-53 years old, even though he is 56. He has qualified for the European finals later this year and plans to enter the 'super-senior' category (53-62) at the world finals next year. Both events will be covered on Sky Sports, ESPN Classic and Radio Europe.

The world championships have a prize fund, but the European tournaments do not and players over here go unpaid. Mr Sanders currently finances his trips through locum conveyancing work, so sponsorship would really help.
