Just after the poor darlings at Queen Mary College, University of London got their degree marks, the results of something far more important came up – those of the first Field Fisher Waterhouse Essay competition for the QM law students who help out at the university’s London Legal Advice Centre. The students submitted a shortish essay entitled: ‘In a wealthy nation, no one should have to rely on law students for legal advice – discuss’, and the winner was Sian Meadows (pictured centre), and the runner up was Nnamdi Emelifeonwu. They both received a two-week summer placement at FFW and £1,000 and £500 respectively. The judges, Karen Beswick, counsel at Accenture, Ellen Fleming (right), a partner until this year at FFW and the Gazette’s features editor Rupert White (left), were all glad to learn that second prize wasn’t a four-week placement...
