Obiter has long had a soft spot for minutiae contained in appointments press releases. In the past we have learned about a solicitor who keeps tropical fish and had to miss her start date because of appendicitis, and her colleague who was pleased to get a job because there was a secure cycle shed. And then there was the lawyer who went to Sir Geoff Hurst's school, but decades later. In the past few weeks, we have learned that Louise Glover, who is joining niche shipping firm EG Arghyrakis & Co, 'speaks reasonable French, has mastered the Greek alphabet and can get by in a taverna'. Meanwhile, Robert Forsyth has qualified as a solicitor at Higgs & Sons in the Black Country. More importantly, he is a keen sportsman and is a regular member of the Higgs & Sons mixed netball team 'which is unbeaten so far in matches against several professional firms and clients'. Finally, the release for the launch of new firm Best & Soames reads that founders Hubert Best and Martin Soames' early careers have given them a special insight into the media industries - 'Hubert was cathedral organist and master of the choristers in Birmingham and Jerusalem before becoming a solicitor... and continues as an international organ recitalist'.
