Straw in the wind: it is always good to be reminded from time to time that even government ministers suffer the same trials and tribulations as we little people - including the vagaries of public transport. Lord Chancellor Jack Straw, no less, fell foul of the transport system and windy weather this week, arriving at Chancery Lane nearly half an hour late to give a speech at the Guardian's criminal justice summit. His tardiness left chairwoman Samira Ahmed floundering to fill the space until she was rescued by a verbose judge (is there any other kind?). Eventually Straw swept in, clearly a tad ruffled by the journey. 'I am, like many other people, a victim of First Great Western,' he said. 'Or rather, what my colleague Ruth Kelly will be renaming under consumer protection legislation as Last Great Western.' At least his sense of humour was still intact.
