Aspiring barrister Melanie Smith (pictured) has found a novel way of standing out from the crowd when it comes to pupillage applications. The bar vocational course student at London’s College of Law took to the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square to recite famous speeches, including the defence counsel’s closing speech in Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mocking Bird, a book that has inspired many a lawyer to join the profession. Smith says she wants to become a criminal barrister and decided to use her involvement in Antony Gormley’s live artwork, which has now come to an end, to hone her oratory skills. ‘I wanted to get my voice heard and have something a bit quirky on my CV,’ she says. When it comes to savvy marketing, perhaps this student can teach the rest of the profession a thing or two.
