The days when attending the IBA conference was akin to a few days off work are long gone. You could not escape the soft tap-tap of people hacking away at their BlackBerrys at this yearÕs conference - it was constant background noise, whether you were in a session, at lunch or on the bus back to the hotel. But the kind of BlackBerry you have now says quite a lot about your success and status in the profession, the Gazette learned. The most successful corporate lawyers had the flashy latest offering, the 7130g (see (2006) Gazette, 3 August, 11), but what should one make of those still struggling with the original blue Blackberry? The makers may like to call it ÔiconicÕ, but in truth itÕs probably a bit too soon to be retro and classic. The answer for such lawyers, dare one say, would be to stop tapping and start networking to bring in enough new work to upgrade.
