As with anything to do with Europe, plenary sessions of the Council of the Bars and Law Societies of the EU can afford hours of entertainment as the delegations politic, posture and try to out-position each other. One of the most intriguing points at the plenary a fortnight ago in Paris was the approach the various countries took to delegate numbers. It seems that the smaller the country, the bigger the presence. For example, Greece, a country with a population of slightly fewer than 11 million people, sent a delegation numbering 11, while Germany, the biggest country in the EU with a population of more than 80 million, sent a delegation of eight. Likewise, Spain (population slightly less than 43 million) rocked up with ten delegates. It will come as a relief to readers that the UK (60 million) and the Republic of Ireland (4 million) sent small delegations &150; eight and three respectively. While host country France (60.5 million) was remarkably restrained &150; sending a delegation of only four.
