Anyone who has encountered Manchester personal injury firm Amelans will be aware that its lawyers are not shy; in fact, partners Andrew Twambley and Martin Cockx will shortly enjoy TV stardom as the focus of a six-part BBC fly-on-the-wall documentary entitled 'No Win, No Fee'. But even they had to blush when they were approached by clients who had bought an, ahem, intimate item for use in the bedroom and suffered an unfortunate incident. 'Battery acid leaked out all over her thigh and his wrist,' Mr Twambley tells Obiter. Ouch! The firm won that claim, but stresses that it is not prepared to accept every case arising from boudoir or bathroom; the firm told one potential claimant to go away after she moaned that she cut herself while shaving her legs because the razor was 'too sharp'. Apparently, some of the strangest cases arise from attempts to escape from the home. 'One guy came to us wanting to sue the council for failing to repair the front door on his property, which he claimed kept jamming, so he was essentially locked in,' Mr Twambley recalls. 'Rather than phoning the council or the fire brigade to let him out, he jumped out of the window, breaking both legs.' Mr Twambley says: 'We didn't accept the case and were tempted to go round and show him how to use his phone or door, but we didn't think that would be covered by a conditional fee agreement.'
