Even in these tough times, some law firms are still offering new graduates generous starting packages. But none, it seems, can compare to supermarket ALDI. According to the Graduate Market in 2009 survey, published by High Fliers Research, the retailer pays trainee managers £40,000 a year, with an Audi A4 company car thrown in. Top law firms, including the magic circle, are averaging £37,400 for starters, well ahead of the average £27,000 across the survey. The top 11 law firms among the High Fliers UK Top 100 Graduate Employers, with the starting salaries on offer, are: Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer (£39,000), Slaughter and May (£38,000), CMS Cameron McKenna (£37,500), Herbert Smith (£37,500), Clifford Chance (£37,400), Linklaters (£37,400), Allen & Overy (£37,000), Lovells (£37,000), Eversheds (£35,000), Addleshaw Goddard (£24,750-£36,000) depending on location, and DLA Piper (‘competitive’).
