Spandex-sporting solicitor Paul Mulderrig described it as ‘no mean feat for a borderline-fit guy who won’t be getting back on the saddle any time soon.’

The managing director of north-west firm Mulderrigs was referring to the 140 miles he had just cycled to help raise almost £2,500 for a children’s charity. He and seven other cyclists, including his teenage son Tom (pictured right, with his father), had successfully negotiated the coast-to-coast route from St Bees on the Irish Sea to Sunderland on the North Sea.

Mulderrig said: ‘The biggest challenge was the 35 miles through the Pennines, climbing to a height of 600 metres.’

The funds raised are going to Rossendale Rays, a local multi-ability swimming club for children. Donations are still welcome: www.c2crossendale.co.uk.

The cyclists intend to abandon their bikes next year to climb Mont Blanc to raise more money for charity.
