The Gazette does not routinely carry the results of solicitors' sporting efforts - but as these things go, a victory for the Law Society Squash Club has an element of 'man bites dog' about it. This may be a touch hard on the team of solicitors and, erm, a quantity surveyor put together by club captain Giles Stimson, but their record in the annual match against the East Sheen Lawn Tennis and Squash Club over recent years has been at the 'it's the taking part that counts' end of the spectrum. Fortunately, East Sheen did not put out Beverley Bunn this year, whose high serve and deadly drop shot have accounted for several shame-faced male City lawyers in the past (although, in an effort to spare their blushes, we should say the gender gap can be quite narrow on the squash court). East Sheen did have one woman in its line-up and cunningly Mr Stimson pitted her against his ringer surveyor, who swept her aside 3-0. Sadly, Mr Stimson was on the wrong end of the same score in the top match, while Robert Lusher of Cannings Connolly also went down to a defeat in the best game of the night. But victories for Paul Marchand of Meridian Securities - despite apparently 'pretending to be suffering from something avian', according to Mr Stimson - and Adam Powell of Judge Sykes Frixou ensured a 3-2 victory for the Law Society.
