The Gazette's report on Doncaster lawyer Ged Hale's claim to be the first solicitor-advocate to wear a wig has certainly got our post bag bulging. There have been several solicitors claiming the same honour - though it seems no one can beat 10am on 2 January 2008. Perhaps the overall winner - dare we say - may be Neil Bannister, a prosecutor with CPS Warwickshire. As Mr Bannister points out, though the defence solicitor opposite him at Warwick Crown Court on 2 January was also sporting some horsehair headgear, 'as the ?prosecutor introducing the case I spoke first and would therefore marginally have the better claim to Mr Hale or any other defence advocate'. However, Obiter rather likes the attitude of south-west solicitor-advocate Stephen Nunn, who reckons that no solicitor in the south-west would be seen dead wearing a wig in court. He writes: 'There will be no need to interview me as to what it feels like to wear horsehair on my head, as I will studiously avoid such a situation. I have no intention of perpetuating the antiquated court dress and wear with pride my own hair.'
